Tuvalu Profile

Tuvalu is a small island nation located in the central Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. A map of Tuvalu shows a group of low lying coral islands and atolls spread across a wide area of ocean. Despite its large maritime zone, Tuvalu has very limited land area and is one of the smallest and least populated countries in the world.

History of Tuvalu

Tuvalu was originally settled by Polynesian peoples who relied on fishing, navigation, and subsistence agriculture. European contact began in the 16th century, and the islands later came under British influence as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony.

Tuvalu became a separate British colony in 1975 and gained full independence in 1978. Since independence, the country has focused on maintaining its sovereignty while addressing challenges related to isolation, limited resources, and environmental change.

Geography of Tuvalu

Tuvalu consists of nine islands, including atolls and reef islands, with a total land area of about 26 square kilometers.
