Togo Profile

Togo is a narrow country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east, Burkina Faso to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. History of Togo

Before European colonization, the area was home to several ethnic groups and local kingdoms involved in regional trade. In the late 19th century, Togo became a German protectorate known as Togoland. After Germany’s defeat in World War I, the territory was divided between Britain and France.

French Togoland later became the independent Republic of Togo in 1960. Since independence, Togo has experienced periods of political tension and reform. In recent years, the country has focused on economic development, infrastructure improvements, and regional cooperation.

Geography of Togo

Togo covers approximately 56,785 square kilometers and can be divided into several geographic zones:

Coastal Plain: Narrow strip with lagoons and sandy beaches
Plateau Region: Rolling hills and fertile land in the south
Togo Mountains: A chain of low mountains running southwest to northeast
Central Plains: Savannah and agricultural areas
Northern Savanna: Drier region with seasonal rainfall

The Mono and Oti rivers are important water sources, supporting farming and local communities. Togo has a tropical climate, with wetter conditions in the south and drier seasons in the north.
